Founded by artist Handiwirman Saputra in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 1997, the studio moved to several locations until a permanent building was erected in 2008 in the small village of Kalipakis in the western part of the city. The aim of the studio is to facilitate the thinking and working process of the artist Handiwirman, helped by his assistants.
Studio Handiwirman is a private space that functions as a laboratory to broaden artistic practice. It is managed by the artist himself, operating in conjunction with his needs. Over time, the facilities have been improved and assistants hired. Although it is a private studio space for the artist, it can also function in as an art education center where people can come to learn. There are several other art facilities located in the area including Sangkring Art Space, SaRanG Building, OFCA International, Kersan Art Studio and Yogya Art Lab as well as many other private artists' studios.
