 Materials and Form in Art Making

This tour will look at why artists use particular materials in their creative process and the surprising and provocative results. Tour leader Dr. Melani Setiawan is a respected art collector with close ties to artists across Indonesia.  She will lead visitors in a lively discussion of the connection between ideas and form in the artist’s work.  Maximum of 20 participants.

SUNDAY, 23 OCTOBER

Forms and Images of Collaboration and Community

This tour will look at the many ways artists 'collaborate' -whether it is with other artists, mediums, or creative processes; as well as how they represent collaboration and community in their artwork. Tour leader Jeannie Park, a cultural practitioner of Javanese classical dance, is the Executive Director at Bagong Kussudiardja Foundation in Yogyakarta, where she supports arts engagement, collaboration, and learning in workshops, residencies, and events at cultural arts centre Padepokan Seni Bagong Kussudiardja.  Maximum of 20 participants.

Application of Photography in Painting

This tour will examine the use of the photographic image as source, inspiration and icon in contemporary painting.  Tour leader Astrid Honold is a Berlin based German art historian focusing on artistic practice and the application of photography in painting. She is the founder of OFCA and Black Cat Publishing.  Maximum of 20 participants. Tour in English.

Creative Inspiration for Children
Studio Grafis Minggiran (Deni Rahman) ● Komharu Studio (Komroden Haru) ● Studio Kalahan (Heri Dono)

This is a special tour for children and their families.  As part of the tour, children will learn to make an embossed print at Studio Grafis Minggiran. Tour leader Sarah Whitmore teaches English to elementary aged children and has a deep of love of the visual and performing arts.  She has been living in Indonesia for more than 25 years working at NGO’s and non-profits in community development, and more recently working in multicultural education. She is a mother of two daughters, ages 8 and 12, who share her love for the arts.  Maximum 15 children, plus their accompanying parent(s) or guardian(s).
