Studio Sally Smart is a workspace established in 2015 to support the development of artist.
Sally Smart’s collaborative exhibition project with Entang Wiharso in Indonesia, and her other projects in SE Asia. Studio Sally Smart is developing collaborative programs to work with individual artists and institutions locally and globally, to create exhibitions, residency opportunities and publications. In Yogyakarta Studio Sally Smart is a private space used for Smart’s project development and production with artists and artisans. The studio houses a large workroom and office; with a traditional Javanese Joglo for meetings and art discussion. The studio manager is Elly Mangunsong who facilitates all aspects of the working studio, which is located in the south of Yogyakarta, close to Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI).
Sally Smart regularly exhibits internationally, with a long time interest in performance and Wayang Kulit, her work was first exhibited in Yogyakarta in the Here & Now, Biennale Jogja VIII, in 2005, she has participated in YOS at Black Goat Studios 2014 and 2015. Sally Smart values the support and friendship she has been given by the artist community in Yogyakarta and looks forward to further developing and supporting these relationships and networks.
A leading Australian artist Sally Smart has a practice that engages identity politics, ideas relating to the body, the home and history. Smart’s most recent work includes embroideries made at DGTMB Art Embroidery as assemblage elements in her project The Choreography of Cutting, which re-imagines and re-frames the historical avant-gardes performative practices centered on the body, and experimental visual art forms focused on choreography, costume and theatre design.
Studio Sally Smart has facilities in Melbourne Australia, where she is currently a professorial fellow at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), University of Melbourne. Smart was a University of Melbourne (Master of Fine Arts) graduate in 1991 and a Trustee at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 2001-2008. She has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, the recipient of numerous awards and prizes; Vice Chancellor’s Professorial Fellowship (2016); Australia Council Fellowship (2014); Sackler Fellow Artist-in Residence, University of Connecticut, Storrs, USA (2012). Sally Smart’s major public art commission Shadow Trees was installed Melbourne, Australia (2014).
